Unlike a headshot, which is typically more formal and focused on the face, a portrait offers a broader range of options. It can be formal or relaxed in a studio or environmental setting. 

You can choose to go high-key with a bright white or solid-coloured background or opt for an environmental portrait that tells a story about who you are or your passion.

You're in good company. I often take portraits as part of my editorial work, telling people's stories and documenting life. Sometimes, there is little difference between the two types of work, except the editorial work comes with a story or an article with a portrait.
